What are GLP-1 Medications?

GLP-1 medications are a class of drugs that mimic a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which is naturally produced in the intestine. These medications, called GLP-1 receptor agonists, are primarily used to treat type 2 diabetes and, more recently, obesity. They help regulate blood sugar levels by enhancing insulin secretion, suppressing the release of glucagon (a hormone that raises blood sugar), slowing down gastric emptying, and reducing appetite.

The most well-known GLP-1 medication is Semaglutide (brand names: Ozempic, Wegovy for weight management). However, as research continues, GLP-1 medications are being created with additional benefits.

GLP-1/GIP Dual Agonists

GIP medications are drugs that target the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptor, a hormone receptor involved in regulating blood sugar levels and appetite. GIP is one of the “incretin” hormones, like GLP-1, which are secreted in response to food intake and stimulate insulin release from the pancreas. However, unlike GLP-1, GIP does not slow gastric emptying as significantly but does play a role in fat storage and metabolic regulation.

Currently, there are no standalone GIP medications widely available, but they are part of combination therapies that act on both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. The most prominent example is Tirzepatide (brand name: Mounjaro, Zepbound for weight management), which is a dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist. This combination leverages the benefits of both hormones to regulate blood sugar more effectively and reduce weight, making it particularly useful for treating type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Dual GIP/GLP-1 medications work by:

  1. Enhancing insulin secretion when blood sugar is high
  2. Suppressing glucagon release, which helps reduce glucose production by the liver
  3. Slowing gastric emptying to a lesser degree than GLP-1 medications alone
  4. Reducing appetite and promoting weight loss, which is significant for those with obesity or metabolic syndrome

Dual GIP/GLP-1 therapies are shown to be more effective in blood sugar control and weight loss than GLP-1 agonists alone.

Research has also shown GLP-1 and GIP medications may benefit heart health, making them a popular choice for individuals with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular risk factors. They do, however, come with potential side effects like nausea, vomiting, and gastrointestinal issues, which can vary in intensity from person to person.
